Insgesamt ein Buch mit dem man sich sein Englischvokabular verbessern kann. Allerdings finde ich es als Fortsetzung der anderen 2 Bücher sehr lahm.
This third Sally Lockhart Mystery I thought even more breathtaking and exiting than the previous one. Complex, dark and realisitic. Triple worth the price.
What a book! I finished this today, ending a tour de force of reading 300 pages in 2 days. This just goes to say how gripping, thrilling, entrancing this book is -- once it draws you in, it won't let go of you till you've finished it in great big gulps.Pullman is excellent at building up tension and never fails to amaze me with his utterly credible way of portraying female protagonists (Sally Lockhart as much as Lyra in "His Dark Materials"). I like the way he brings in background knowledge (history, especially of socialism in this book, but also on a more general level: languages, geography, law...) subtly without forcing it on the reader, but just having it flow in with the story naturally. I also enjoyed how he uses language (both foreign languages and dialectal variants of English) to describe his characters by the way they speak -- never mind he doesn't get it quite 100% right all the time, that just adds to the enjoyment.All in all, an absolutely brilliant read, highly enjoyable. Here's why I don't give it full marks though: The plotline is just a tad too adventurous (in a book so thoroughly researched and focussed on realism in all its little details), and coincidence just plays too big a part. It feels a bit cheap sometimes when the weirdest stroke of luck gets Sally out of even the worst pinch. But that said -- brilliant book!!!
Mal endlich wieder ein Buch, das von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite spannend und fesselnd ist. Wie in allen Bücher von Pullman gibt es die bekannten, liebenswerten Charaktere Sally und Jim und eine Menge neuer Personen. Diesmal versucht jemand Sallys gesamtes Leben zu verändern, jemand der vor nichts zurückschreckt. Die Ursprünge gehen in ihre eigene Vergangenheit zurück und es tauchen längst vergessene Gestalten auf.Auch als Erwachsene kann man sich einfach nicht der Spannung und Magie dieses Buches entziehen, wie es sonst nur Bücher wie "Die Alchemistin", "Die Winterprinzessin" etc. schaffen, und ich hoffe, dass P. Pullman noch weitere Bücher schreibt.
